Orcs, Hobbits, and Elves; Oh, My! The Two Towers was a rather nerdy book, as many would imagine. There were many characters that played a major part in the plot. There is Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Gandalf the White, Pippin Took and Merry Brandybuck, and Gollum/Smeagle. Each character had a bit in the story that was important and benefits the story. The most important character to the story line is Frodo Baggins. Frodo is a hobbit from The Shire who gets coaxed into an adventure by an old family friend, Gandalf. Frodo doesn’t seem to be hero material, but is put in a position where he must accept. He is forced to take upon him the burden of an evil ring that changes the hearts of good creatures. This dynamic duo causes trouble wherever they wander. They happen onto Frodo and Sam in their travels and unfortunately get dragged into the very center of it all. These two are fun loving characters that are oblivious to the oncoming war until they are in the cross-hairs. Pippin is a very kind hobbit, but has some coward-like traits that cause him to be more of a follower than a leader. He follows his reckless best friend into mischief all the time. Merry is a bold and courageous character, but isn’t very bright. He can come up with plans on the fly, but they seem to backfire on him and get the pair into trouble. Finally, we have Gollum, or his counter-part Sméagol. Sméagol is a creature that was twisted by the ring’s power. The ring turned him mad with hatred and desire. He constantly longed for the ring to be within his grasp. This desire created a different and dangerous side of Sméagol that threatens Frodo. Gollum, Sméagol’s bad side, represents the evils within each human being. Gollum is the devil on the Sméagol’s shoulder that tries to lure him to the ring. The two halves fight each other in making moral decisions, like when trying to decide if trusting Frodo is a smart idea. Gollum is dangerous and wild, whereas Sméagol is kind and
