Organ Transplants In Frankenstein

In the book: Frankenstein, a mad scientist named Frankenstein wanted to cheat death by re-animating a dead corpse by the power of electricity. Nowadays, scientists can do the same thing, but not by raising the dead or by using electricity, they instead use science to create artificial organs and limps to help people who need organ transplants or lost a limb or two. Some examples of the advancements scientists made are: by using 3D printers to create reliable, cheap prosthetics that anyone can make as well as 3D printing artificial organs when the organ needed is not available. One way the organ transplants have advance throughout the years, is the ability to create new, identical organs by using the person who is getting a transplant’s stem cells. Stem cells are types of cells, found in bone marrow, brain tissue, blood, blood vessels, skeletal muscles, skin, and liver. Stem cells primary function is to repair damaged/diseased cells by rewriting its genetic code to become an exact copy of that …show more content…

When the body When the body rejects an organ, it sends white blood cells to attack it, the reason the white blood cells attack the organ, is because they believe that it is a foreign threat, that needs to be destroyed to protect the body from harm. To stop the immune system from attacking the organ is by using harmful drugs called: immunosuppressants. However, a scientist from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, named Naji, has discovered a way to stop the immune system from attacking the transplanted organ without using immunosuppressants. The solution Naji founded is by injecting islet cells into the thymus. The thymus is an organ where islet cells grow and mature as well as being educated to respond to a antigen. So, by transplanting the islet cells into the thymus, the white blood cells are educated that the islet cells are non-hostile and will not attack.
