Every character in the novel Dreaming in Cuban has been through a specific struggle, whether it is physical, psychological or even both. The novel focuses on the similarities of their different experiences of each character, and the family ties, intuitions, and dreams that bind them together. Outdated stereotypes create forced expectations and affect people for the worst. This is a common theme between “Turkeys in the Kitchen” by Dave Barry and “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. These works deal with stereotypes of gender and ethnicity, as well as how they are interpreted on the receiving end. Turkeys in the Kitchen deals with gender through anecdotes about cooking, and how the stereotypes of men and women in the kitchen persist post-women’s-liberation. “The Myth of the Latin Woman” deals with Puerto Rican stereotypes through anecdotes about how she is treated differently as a woman for her ethnicity, and how she is prematurely judged by her Puerto Rican behavior and ethnicity.
Stories and memories passed on through generations can help to shape an individual. In many instances, storytelling can tell a lesson or push a person’s opinion about something in a certain direction. Memories can sometimes be unreliable, but can also be all that someone can base their life off of. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s memoir Silent Dancing: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican childhood uses storytelling to share her memories in a life lesson manner.
The article of “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” the author Gloria Anzaldua experiences in a young age how many people are ashamed about their identity, where they belong and how they speak. Gloria had always struggled with identity. Gloria describes a moment where she is sent into a corner for trying to pronounce her name to the teacher, and these types of memories can put deep scars into one’s identity. Growing up, she was also surrounded by lots of sayings that only women had to follow, relating to how you should act and such. She identifies herself as a Chicana.
Kingston reveals another example of how defying gender roles can lead to a better life in her story “Shaman.” As her mom is

Judith Ortiz Cofer published the article, “The Myth of the Latin Woman,” where she expresses her anger towards stereotypes, inequality, and degradation of Latin Americans. Cofer explains the origins of these perceived views and proceeds to empower Latin American women to champion over them. Cofer establishes her credibility as a Latin American woman with personal anecdotes that emphasize her frustration of the unfair depiction of Latinos in society.

When taking the opportunity to distinguish herself from the typical “Dominican daughter” or ‘Dominican slave,” she takes a cultural norm like long hair and decides to impulsively change it (416). Lola enjoyed the “feeling in [her] blood, the rattle” that she got when she told Karen to “cut my hair” (418).

Screaming, laughing, learning and growing molded this one young lady to overcome all statics .Factors such as birthplace, extracurricular activities and the simple thing she couldn’t control, her origin were deciding factors for where she is present day. New York, the city that never sleeps, a city diverse in all aspects of life, the city where it all started. 18 years growing up in Harlem wasn’t all it was cracked up to be especially for a young Hispanic female. Being surrounded with drugs, violence and public disobedience were some of the easiest of distractions that I encountered every day.
The Myth of The Latin Woman Analysis Latin American women face challenges every single day and moment of their lives. They are strongly discriminated against in all sectors of employment, in public places, and even while just walking down the street. In her essay, "The Myth of the Latin Woman," Judith Ortiz Cofer describes her own experiences using illuminating vignettes, negative connotation, and cultural allusion to exemplify how she used the struggles in her day to day life as a Latin woman to make herself stronger. Cofer uses illuminating vignettes to illustrate the different situations she encountered as a Latina while growing up and living in America.
This caused her to alienate herself since her mother asked her to keep a part of herself hidden from the world by binding her and making sure no one found out she menstruated ealy (Anzaldúa 1983, 221). This will later isolate her further but ultimately lead her to reflect on the racism that surrounds her. In addition, Anzaldúa’s identity also suffer because she denied her heritage and the traditions that with it. She mentions that she felt ashamed of her mother and her loud tendencies, it is an archetype that most Hispanic mothers are loud by nature, and the fact that her lunches, or “lonches”, consisted
