As a Japanese living in Manchu, China during World War 2, my grandfather, Osamu Inanaga and his family, had a hard time. Before the war began, his parents were sent to Sakhalin, Karafuto for a business trip for a company they worked at called “Oji Paper”. They were sent to Sakhalin because Japan had a shortage on pulp to make the paper so in order to keep the company going, they had to start more companies at Sakhalin.
On April 29, 1936, Osamu Inanaga was born. During that time, Karafuto was controlled by Japan and was safe. The Japanese began to settle on the Southern end of Sakhalin in 1679. Many things were stolen and many women were raped. On August 20, 1945, according to Japan Times, there was an incident where women committed suicide at a post office in Makoa (then called Karafuto) when the Soviets seized the town. The women were female phone operators who took cyanide because they feared being raped by soldiers from the Soviet Red Army. During that time, Japanese women believed that they should never do anything affectionate with a man until they got married. He strongly believed LP Gas would be the next big thing and that it would change the future. He begged his friend’s dad to let him work at the company so he could learn more about the gas. From 5 in the morning, they would bring the empty cylinders and fill them up with gas. They would then drive back to the company to build and then deliver the gas to homes. In the evening, they would sell the gas. They continued to work from 5 in the morning to late at night for 2 years. He later received the LP Gas National Examination Award and license in order to work with LP
