Jazz has been around since the 19th century. But the most well-known jazz pianist is none other than “the master of swing”, Oscar Peterson. Peterson has been known for being the best jazz pianist of all time, being awarded the “Companion of the Order of Canada” and is the first African- Canadian to be appointed in the Canadian Music hall of Fame. Oscar Peterson opened up the path for people of colour to pursue their dream in the Jazz industry. Peterson’s accomplishments have had a big impact on his career, his accomplishments have also contributed to Canada’s history and lastly, his legacy impacted young people on starting piano and learning more about him.

Petersons performing career started in his teen years when he won the “CBC’s National Music Competition” at the age of 14 in 1940. With the help of his self-formed trio, he began to grow throughout Canada performing on radio stations; from this he became Canada’s first jazz star, earning the nickname “the brown …show more content…

Peterson was also a teacher and role model to young children during his time. During his time alive he had a stroke and knew he was going to die soon. He along with the Royal Conservatory of Music created the Oscar Peterson School of Music. This school gives all children access to music for free because Peterson believed everyone should be able to learn about music. I have been a part of the Royal Conservatory of Music, which helped me enhance my piano journey. I admire his courageous spirit and how strong he was when he faced criticism and was told that Canadian people of colour could not be successful in the music industry. I as a person of colour in 2022 can be successful in the music industry such as Drake, The Weekend and Jully Black are all examples of successful African-Canadian musicians all because Oscar Peterson paved the way. This inspired me to help get Filipino-Canadian artists more recognized
