Oscar Fingall O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was an acclaimed Irish novelist, playwright, and poet, who was most remembered for his contribution to the aestheticism movement. Born on October 16, 1854, in Dublin, Ireland, Wilde was the second son of William Wilde and Jane Francesca Elgee. His father, William, was a respected doctor and eye-surgeon in the Irish community, while his mother, Jane Francesca, was an Irish-nationalist involved in the Young Irelander Rebellion in 1848, and wrote under the pseudonym “Speranza”. Oscar also had two siblings: his older brother, Willie, and his younger sister, Isola, who died at the age of 10. He received the Royal School Scholarship post-graduation, attended Trinity College in Dublin, and then moved to England, where he attended Magdalen College in Oxford. Once Wilde was finished with his schooling, he moved to London and published Poems, which sparked his journey as a novice in the world of writing. Shortly after this, he began his American tour, where he delivered 140 lectures about his Irish nationalism and background, in just nine months. Post-touring, Wilde “made his name as a self-appointed ‘Professor of Aesthetics’” and cultivated ideals about the Aestheticism movement, which focused on culture and literature that concerned beauty, than social or political persuasion (Sammells, Encyclopedia of Irish History and Culture). Wilde was able to produce most of his critically-acclaimed works during this creative and inspiring period of his life. One of his works, The Picture of Dorian Gray, initiated outrage for its scandalous plot and hidden sexuality messages. However, it elevated his popularity as a writer, and allowed him to use aesthetic morals to develop his distinct writing
