Oskar Schindler was one of the greatest heroes during the Holocaust. He was born on April 28, 1908, in Svitavy, Moravia. Schindler was a German industrialist who ended up saving the lives of over 1,200 Jews during World War II. Schindler grew up in a Catholic family and attended German schools which he studied engineering at. Growing up he worked various jobs before starting his own enamelware company in Krakow, Poland which was occupied by Nazis at the time.
During the Holocaust, Schindler employed Jewish people in his factory and protected them from the Nazis by claiming that they were essential workers. He spent his own money to bribe officials and keep his Jewish workers safe, he even risked his own life to protect them. Schindler's factory became a safe place for Jews during WW2 and Schindler would use his influence to ensure that they were all treated fairly and given proper food and medical care during the holocaust. …show more content…

Schindler convinced the Nazis to allow him to transfer his Jewish workers to his new factory in Czechoslovakia, which was outside the reach of the Nazis. Schindler spent all his money bribing Nazi officials and purchasing food and supplies for his workers. He even went as far as to employ his worker’s children in his factory, which also saved their lives.
After the war, Schindler lived the rest of his life in relative obscurity and lived off money that his jewish friends and the people he saved during the war donated to him. In 1982 his story was brought to light when Thomas Keneally wrote the book “Schindler's Ark”. Steven Spielberg later adapted the book into a movie named “Schindler’s List”, it went on to win 7 Oscars and is considered one of the best movies of all time. The movie brought Schindler's story to a global audience and placed him in history as one of the German heroes that stood up against the Nazis during the
