Journey of a Lifetime

This is a story about a boy. A boy who is on a journey for the truth in life and love. Oskar, a nine year old boy, who lost his father on 9/11, finds a key inside an Envelope with the name ‘Black’ written on it. He roams all of New York, searching for the mysterious ‘Black’, hoping that he would find something related to his father, but what he finds is something he never expected. On this journey, he learns many things, including a neighbor he never knew existed, and his long, lost grandfather. Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close, demonstrates many elements of mood, in this close-to-the-heart story. He writes Oskar and his father’s relationship so well, that readers would feel a profound connection by the second chapter. One of the ways he did this was the way he played with words and their simplicity. He wrote Oskar as a normal boy who needed assurance of his father being present. “Dad?” “Yeah Buddy?” “Nothing.” (Foer 223) When Oskar says ‘Dad?’ he doesn’t want to ask a question, he wants to know that his father is there. This conversation shows an intense bond between Oskar and his father, not because they love each other, but because his father was Oskar’s motivator. Thomas (Jr.) accepted his son for himself, he helped him explore the world and taught him about its wonder’s, Foer might have made Thomas such an amazing father to show the lack of a father figure in his own life, making him a character who strived to be what he wanted from his childhood.
