In life, the small and simple object is sometimes the most important aspect. As of the play Othello, The handkerchief is a small item, but yet still relevant. Although The handkerchief is a plot device, there is sufficient evidence that indicates that the handkerchief has important value as a gift, Othello’s origin, and Desbondona’s love.
The handkerchief is used as a gift that represents Desdemona’s trust. To start off,
Iago Said to Othello“...Have you not sometimes seen a handkerchief Spotted with strawberries in your wife’s hand?” and Othello reply with “I gave her such a one; ’was my first gift.”( Act 3,Scene 3,line)
In short, Othello said to Iago that the handkerchief is her first gift, which would soon indicate trust between Othello and Desdemona. Secondly,“The colors of the handkerchief, white and red, reinforce the notion of categorization.
