Othello by William Shakespeare was a play about jealousy. Iago makes this point very clear in act II scene I lines 280-306. Iago is a man who acts as if he's trustworthy and honest but really just lies to everyone. You could say he's two faced. Iago is jealous of Michael Cassio because he got the position he wanted as a lieutenant. He is also jealous because he thinks that Othello is sleeping with his wife. Othello is fed lies from Iago about Cassio and Desdemona being together which causes Othello to become jealous. Iago also uses his words brutally because of his atrocious personality. First to prove this play is about jealousy Iago uses metaphors to talk poorly of the people he jealous about. He calls Othello “...poor trash of Venice" (297) Also in this speech he says " Abuse him to the moor" (300) he talks about talking poorly about Michael Cassio to Othello so that Othello will trust Iago. Iago talks about getting evened with Othello “...wife for wife" (293) He says if that fails he will make Othello so jealous that no one can fix it. Iago also talks of himself being evil. He wants to get revenge on Othello because he's jealous because he heard that Othello slept with his wife. He also says he'll talk bad about Cassio to Othello because he wants to get him fired and Cassio got the position he wanted. I learned that Iago's plans will work out every time he gets angry and starts ranting like this speech. He mainly talks about Othello and Cassio in this speech because he is jealous of them. Iago even got Othello to be jealous by telling him the faintest lies and letting them get to him.
