The argument made by the author Robert Sklar in his book Movie-Made America has to do with the impact that American movies have had on the country's culture and society as a whole. Sklar says this by stating that, “American movies, through much of their span, have altered or challenged many of the values and doctrines of powerful social and cultural forces in American society, providing alternative ways of understanding the world.”
During the 1950s, movies and TV were both a force for conformity and rebellion, depending on the specific content and audience. On one hand, the dominant narrative of movies and TV during this era tended to reinforce mainstream values and promote social conformity. Many films and TV shows portrayed idealized versions of American life, featuring characters who conformed to traditional gender roles and family structures. These narratives often emphasized the importance of conformity and adherence to societal norms, portraying those who deviated from these expectations as outcasts or villains. On the other hand, some films and TV shows challenged these mainstream values and promoted rebellion against the status quo.
“The Freshman” and “Knute Rockne: All American”, two completely different plot lines with one connection: football to masculinity. “The Freshman” is about a Harold, a boy dreaming to go to college and be the most popular kid on campus. All of his dreams were based around this character from a movie, “College Hero”, name Speedy. Harold gets into Tate College and tries to copy Speedy in every way possible. Inorder for him to becomes the most popular student, he needs to take down the football captain.
The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.

Children have access to hundreds, if not thousands, of TV shows daily and while some of them may have educational value to them not all carry such content. When a child watches a television show that does not have as much educational value what do they take away from it? Are the messages good or bad? It is the duty for parents and guardians to weed out the television shows that hold little value in education and to promote the good.
