The author, Silas House, takes offense to the put down of his hometown. The article maintains an angry tone as he describes all of the good of his homeland and all the things reporters that “ don’t know what they’re talking about” say. I agree with Silas, that the region of eastern Kentucky does not get enough credit for the good things is possesses, like “passing fair ordinance laws to protect all people from discrimination”. Silas talks about how people have worked so hard in this community, about those who try their best to defeat the stereotypes of outside people. I know many people who have worked hard and long to make something of themselves in this area.
Located in a “lonesome area,” the town did not have much to see. All of the local buildings were falling apart; with their chipping paint and “dirty windows” and “irrelevant signs.” The citizens of the dreary town were nice people, everyone knew everyone, and they spoke to each other in an accent "barbed with prairie twang.” The description of this town makes it sound very dull and boring, doesn’t it? Have you ever felt safe somewhere, but realized your only protection was ignorance? In Jacqueline Woodson’s When a Southern Town Broke a Heart, she introduces the idea that as you grow and change, so does your meaning of home. Over the course of the story, Woodson matures and grows older, and her ideas about the town she grew up in become different. The protagonists of both Erik Larson’s the Devil in the White City and Denis Johnson’s novella Train Dreams share similar experiences despite being located in different parts of the country. “That he'd taken on an acre and a home in the first place he owed to Gladys. He'd felt able to tackle the responsibilities that came with a team and wagon because Gladys had stayed in his heart and in his thoughts.” (Johnson, 82). At a time where women are beginning to venture out and become increasingly present in society, Grainier acknowledges the strength and support he received from his late-wife Gladys.

Cinderella Man “Any lack of confidence in the economic future or the basic strength of business in the United States is foolish,” Herbert Hoover stated when addressing the economy in the 1930’s. Sadly, the statement turned out to be false once the economy plummeted. The Great Depression took many americans by surprise, causing havoc wherever it reached. Many citizens of the United States invested everything to the stock market, and in turn were left on the streets with nothing after the economic crash of the 1920’s.
In describing the land as extensively beautiful and “out there”, Truman Capote is setting an environment of an isolated small town, where not much ever happens. This sets a contradictory theme for the rest of the book, as a small community of neighbors and friends turn on each other after a series of murders take place. In describing the town of Holcomb, Kansas, Capote uses strong imagery to set the tone for the small town as “calm before the storm.” Furthermore, Capote compares the unique grain fields to that of ancient Greek temples, indicating that the story contained in this novel has a larger significance as an inside look of timeless human themes such as murder and hatred and how these have existed for all of humanity.
It had two stories with porches, with banisters and such things. The rest of the town looked like servants’ quarters surrounding the “big house”. (47) After arriving in town, Janie soon realized she wasn’t living their life, she was living his. Here Hurston portrays Joe’s overbearing hold over Janie. The description of Eatonville is consumed by the imagery of Joe’s house, store and the porch attached.

Eatonville is a place of repression, what with how Janie worked in the shop, and how gossip ran rampant through the town if deliberation occurred. Eatonville is not a negative and antagonistic place, but simply a place of high standards, which did not suit the independent nature of Janie Crawford. Opposing this place, the rural location known as “The Muck” has almost entirely different motifs. The Everglades was home to farmers and common workmen, not the high-class citizens of Eatonville. People were also free to come as they were, and be treated equally.
CRR #8 Observations: In the reading Our Town by Thornton Wilder, the stage manager uses humor to announce the intermission and goes on to say that three years have passed in the beginning of act two. One detail that stood out was that nothing seemed to change everything stayed the same except that Si Crowell is delivering the paper now like his brothers before him. We did not see much of Emily and George in act 1 and now they are getting married in act 2 this gives me a sense of how much time has passed.
Under the Declaration Independence, it says that everyone has the right to life. In America that does not apply to black people. In the early 1920s, there was a large race riot in Tulsa around 300 innocent black people were killed. It started when black shoe shiner Dick Rowland was arrested after being accused of assaulting a white woman in elevator published by a paper eager to win the local circulation war with the title “To Lynch Negro Tonight”. Whites gathered outside the courthouse of where Rowland was being held to lynch him, blacks came from Greenwood to protect Rowland.
The twenty-fifth chapter of How to Read Literature Like a Professor is where Thomas C. Foster exposes the importance of freeing oneself of their preconceived notions and fulling submerging oneself into the time and situations that literature can hold. He discusses how meaning can be lost upon those who fail to clean themselves of their time period and setting and how it hinders their ability to fully understand what’s going on in between the lines. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird perfectly exemplifies why someone would need to step into the shoes of the characters. In James Baldwin’s essay, Stranger in the Village, he depicts a distant village that has become isolated from outsiders, however, strangers are welcome into the village. Having little distractions, Baldwin finds an ease at mind for focusing on his writing. However, being isolated does have fallbacks. For instance, upon visiting the village, the residents were so unfamiliar with African Americans, which caused many people to stop and view him. Some would put their “hand on my hand, astonished that the color did not rub off” (65).
