Chand’s main purpose in writing the book was to outline a process for leaders to implement effective change through understanding the organization’s culture. Chand believes that through discernment of an organization’s culture, a leader will be better prepared to utilize vision and strategy. This book seeks to assist a leader in harnessing both the strength of vision and strategy with the power of an organization’s culture. As I reflect, I understand the culture of the church prohibited the vision and strategy from being effective.

4. List two items of information this book provided of which you were not previously aware.

The first item of new information was Chand’s assertion that an organization’s culture is influential than vision or strategy. All of the seminars and conferences I have attended stressed the potency of vision and strategy. I cannot recall the concept of culture in any session or breakout times. Consequently, the church’s organizational culture was neglected in favor of vision and strategy. I identified with Chand’s illustrations of leaders being frustrated when vision and strategy did not make lasting change.

Chand affirms, “An inspiring culture is like perfume, filling the air with the sweet aroma of love, encouragement, passion, and a commitment to excellence.” As I read this beautiful statement, I sincerely desire that to be said of the culture I lead. I have been around leaders who exemplify Dr. Chand’s description of an inspiring culture. For example, I sense that Southwestern Assemblies of God University displays this culture. During the on-campus cohort I am drawn to the University. In fact, I look forward to each semester because I cannot wait to be on campus. I believe this is a testimony of the leadership and the professors who work tirelessly to cultivate a culture that emits the sweet aroma of “love, encouragement, passion, and
