Not expecting to be noticed so quickly, Thomas gave orders to lower the sails to half-mast, as the smaller boat neared them. The CSS Drewry was a gunboat out of Fort Marion, formerly Castillo de San Marcos, according to the Captain, which was located on the northern shore of Matanzas Bay at St. Augustine. The Drewry was to escort Thomas’ ship in for a meeting with an important man on an important mission was what they told him. When they stopped him, Thomas told them that he planned to stop anyway, that he was dropping off a few supplies (which was not true, but he figured it would get him in good with those in charge) and taking on fresh water. He figured he could spare a few cases of rum and a bushel or three of fruits for the fort.

Tattoos are “declarations of selfhood” that make people unique and special (Jamison 459). It is odd to think that ink on an arm could be so meaningful to someone; however, to Jamison, it is her identity. Her new identity is one of independence, strength, and wisdom. Her tattoo means much more than a quote on her arm or something that makes her stand out amongst others physically. The difference between when she entered and left that tattoo parlor doesn’t involve the new ink on her arm.

First of all, tattoos haven’t completely been accepted by society. When a person gets a tattoo, it limits its opportunities in life because of their negative association. One can even see it in job opportunities. Many companies wouldn’t hire a person with tattoos. Since, they don’t hold a professional appearance that business owners want from their subordinates.

The Marine Corps must maintain a positive perception in the eyes of the public, must maintain good order and discipline, and must have a standard of uniformity. Most of everyone who goes in, goes in for a tattoo that has meaning or to make them feel beautiful. It is the same for piercings, people go in to get piercings to feel more like themselves and to define them as a person. My personal experience with tattoos, is the meaning of each. I have a small tattoo on my ankle that I got with my best friend that symbolizes that we are different, yet the same. My tattoo on my arm, I got matching with my boyfriend that are the four elements, he got two of them

When someone mentions tattooing or tattoos, the first reason that comes to mind as to why someone would get a tattoo is that it was done for the aesthetic appeal, as a sort of piece of art done on the body, but now after looking at it using sociological imagination perspective, I realise that tattoos have very different meanings to those who have them. Some people do in fact choose to get tattoos solely for the aesthetic appeal, however there a great deal of more who get tattoos for other reasons.
Tattoos played a major role in gender discrimination as well and incited cultural discourse and anxiety in society. In the Modern Era, in the USA, especially after World War II when women became involved in the home-front jobs, they started to break away from the traditional stereotypical woman image by getting tattoos; this created much anxiety in society, because it was bringing into question the separation between a burly, working man’s and a delicate, housekeeping woman’s disposition. After the sexual revolution in the 60s, “tattoos were… resurrected in the counterculture by women who were rethinking womanhood” (Mifflin 55). The Modern Era was the era of skepticism about occupations and responsibilities, like who should be the breadwinner

Slumping out of my cozy bed, I dragged my relentless body over to the dresser to grab the first article of clothing in sight. A black shirt with holes in it, my usual outfit choice.
