Sierrah Martin Mrs. Kent 8th English March 10th ,2015 Alaska’s History Most people do not know that Alaska has a extremely colorful history. Alaska has not always been a part of America; it had to go through a statehood like the other states ,but much later. Alaska also had to be colonized like the other states. Alaska’s history includes natives, colonization, becoming a U.S. territory, and achieving statehood. Alaskan natives had to achieve various task in order to survive and make Alaska what it is today. The Alaskan people had to walk across the Bering Sea from Russia to get to Alaska (Devine 44). Christianity first came to Alaska in the 1800s. A missionary named Sheldon Jackson came to Alaska from Russia to do missionary work in Alaska (Christianity 1). Even though Christianity came to Alaska, the natives still kept their own traditions, too. Alaskan natives had many different languages. The native families made colorful mask to tell their family stories (Devine 1). Alaskan natives also caught walrus and skinned them (49). The walrus skins went for an abundance of money in the 19th century because the natives had many uses for them. A gold rush came to Alaska. They called it the Klondike gold rush. The people who came to Alaska for the gold rush had to learn some of the Alaskan languages to communicate. The Alaskan flag is unique because of the way the stars are arranged. The stars are arranged with a group of stars in the middle and one star at the top. The stars in the middle symbolize the dipper. The star at the top signifies the bear (163). The stars on the flag are actual stars that you can see in the sky in Alaska. The blue background of the Alaskan flag is for the Alaskan sea (Pounds 1). That is what the Alaskan flag stands represents. Alaska’s origin came from tribes that came to Alaska when the natives crossed the Bering Sea (So 1). After the tribes came, Alaska was bought from the Russians (World 1). The origins of Alaska did not have a strong community. Soon after colonization and World War II, they fixed that by becoming a better community (Gale 1). To celebrate the origins of Alaska today the people of Alaska have a festival called” The first Alaska Day Festival was in 1949’ (Pound 1). In World War II, America and Russia were against each other. Alaska was bought from the Russians and this did not make the Russians happy. Well because it was a war, no one was really happy about anything (World 1). After World War II Alaska became a popular place for tourists. The tourists came to Alaska to learn about history and go sight seeing. After World War II Alaskan natives had to work hard so that tourists would come (Publishers
