Introduction:
Although Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein was published almost two hundred years ago, the novel remains relevant to many issues in today’s society. The novel develops several intertwined themes related to inner and outer beauty, appearances and judgment based on one’s looks which are used to make commentary on humanity and our society. The theme of beauty and perception of beauty is used throughout the novel as commentary on the ability of society to transform a person by both how they are perceived and how they are treated. Through the exploration of beauty and its conceptualization by the characters in the novel, Shelley explores the idea of social prejudice, one of mankind's most enduring and destructive flaws.

d. The major theme in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is the great emphasis placed on appearance for acceptance in society. In modern society as well as in the society of Frankenstein, people judge appearance (looks, clothes, skin color etc)
e. When Victor looked at his monster, he was disgusted because he couldn't see the beauty that he put into his creation. All Frankenstein could see was the hideous monster.
B. There is more to beauty than what meets the eye.
a. Many people base beauty on outer looks alone rather than taking the time to see deep into the spirit of beauty, which lies under the skin.
b. In Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, the monster's actions are a reflection of society's prejudice towards his appearance.
c. The monster starts off as an experiment brought to life by Victor's love for science and creation. The beauty contained by the monster is deep within his making and can also be defined as natural or inner beauty.

Victor and the Monster are mirror images, portraying synonyms (both have beauty) and antonyms (both have evil/ugly character traits as well) of each other at the same time.
a. The story compares and contrasts the creator and his monstrous creation. Through interactions between Victor and the Monster and the events surrounding their lives the author challenges the reader's idea of good (beauty) and evil (ugly, monsterous)reader can see that good and evil can co-exist within the same person and it is this coexisting of good and evil that make the reader empathize with both Frankenstein and with Victor.
b. While the monster’s evil side is obvious and direct Victor’s evil side is hidden in the choices he makes because of his ego. His strong desire to create life makes him forget the world around him and he neglects to take caution and think about consequences.
D. The monster is quite human on the inside, the reader sees this in the portion of the story narrated by the monster.
