I think Zero probably felt horrible when the warden said that. The warden was talking about keeping the story simple, she said, “Stanley tried to run away in the night, fell in a hole, and the lizards got him. That’s it. We’re not even going to give them Zero’s body. As far as anybody knows, Zero doesn’t exist.”
After Reading Hole in my life by Jack gantos I believe that the choices Gantos made influenced his life more than the background situation he was in. The first poor choice gantos makes in this book is agreeing to join the Hash smuggling trip for $10,000. “count me in” he says, fatal words that have horrible consequences. The first of these consequences is “... a book the size of a dictionary.

We all know that George Washington was the first president of the United States. He got elected president in 1789 by 69 members of Congress. The title, Hole in My Life, has multiple meanings. On a literal note, the term “hole” is prison slang, meaning isolation: “One morning Mr. Bow took me down to the hole, which was a corridor of isolation cells under the hospital wing, when he was doing basic medical rounds” (184). Gantos was in the “hole,” which could be part of what the title represents. Moreover, Gantos will likely struggle getting jobs in the future, due to his criminal record, leaving a hole where he could have been pursuing his writing career as an intern. Lastly, Gantos still displays dislike for his past: “Even now, when walking some of Boston’s meaner streets, I find myself moving like a knife, carving my way around people, cutting myself out of their picture and leaving
Making a bad excuse to leave the house. Tom bring his father's best dog and taking that out to “hunt.” Then he shoots the dog on accident and gets in big trouble. For stealing a gun and shooting his dog. For my theme it would be proud in my view then mad and or deprest.
A few things went wrong, which made people question how effective this prison really was. Afterall they couldn’t talk, if they did or disobeyed something else they had to go to a dark place. Called the hole, this entire place could make someone go crazy. Prisoners actually managed to escape, even the slightest wrong thing is a huge open door for escape. A couple people escaped, Teddy Cole, Ralph Roe,John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, Bernie Coy and Frank Morris.
One very important scene that reveals the theme is when Ponyboy and the the rest of his group go to the movies and meet two Socs, Cherry and Marcia. As the movie goes on, Ponyboy and Cherry continue to talk and realize that their prior thoughts they had about each other and each other’s group is false. For example, when Cherry says, that “things are rough all over” (Hinton 35). Stereotypically Socs have money, cars, and are supposed to have this perfect life
Finally, once they are caught Annie Dillard points out; “He chased us through the backyard labyrinths of ten blocks before he caught us by our jackets. He caught us and we all stopped. We three stood staggering, half blinded, coughing, in an obscure hilltop backyard; a man in his twenties, a boy, a girl. He had released our jackets, our pursuer, our captor, our hero; He knew we weren’t going anywhere. We all played by the rules”.
(Sachar 5) Stanley, a protagonist in the novel “Holes” by Louis Sacher, changes . Stanley shows a hopeful, yet stressful kind of person. Stanley shows perseverance from beginning to end in the novel “Holes”. The author demonstrates when it states, “He tried to jam it into the earth, but the blade banged against the ground..”
