The influence of the media on Australian society can be seen from the introduction of free to air television since its beginning in 1956. This period of change in Australian society is known as popular culture when entertainment was aimed at youths. Popular culture is defined as, “The types of entertainment that most people in society enjoy.” This was heavily linked to the easy access to the public when television was launched after World War 2. An Australian icon who brought change to the way Australians watched television was Kerry Packer, who change the beliefs and values in Australian television and way of life.

Life as an Indigenous Person in Early Australia Mabo was born into an Australia of racism and inequality, where hope within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was seemingly nonexistent. The Overuse of Television Kameron G Loyd BYU-Idaho During an average week, how much television does the average child watch? Parents, educators, and concerned citizens alike would be appalled at the answer of 1,480 minutes (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). They would also be revolted by the statistic that 54% of four to six year olds would rather spend time watching television instead of spending time with their fathers (BLS American Time Use Survey, A.C. Nielsen Co.). In 1984, Neil Postman saw how devastating television watching was becoming to the culture of America, and gave a speech to the literary community at the 1984 Frankfort Germany Book Fair entitled “Amusing Ourselves to Death” which deals directly with this monolithic issue. Although the speech and subsequent article, published in Et Cetra, were directed at the publishers, writers, illustrators, etc., all those who read this article can also benefit from Postman’s overarching desire to decrease the hours of mind-numbing television watching.
However, Postman wanted to promote the idea that people would become so obsessed with pleasure that they eventually sacrifice their rights. Postman furthers on this idea by describing television as something that will be an exchange of rights for entertainment. He then extends this theory by saying ideas are affected by their medium and that media as a medium causes people to evaluate information’s quality by its entertainment
Neil Postman in Chapter 1 of "Amusing Ourselves to Death" aims to show how the television can manipulate a person 's decision in politics, religion, education and turn those into entertainment. Even today Postman’s ideeas stand strong and it is true that if an information is entertaining the viewer will not look at the autenticity or what the origins of it are. Probably as expected, the more the technology advances, the more the manipulation from the television is taking place. Entertainment is seen everywhere whether it 's reading a book or seeing a movie with friends. Entertainment can shape a society and many individuals include time for entertainment on a daily basis. Many people love entertainment and find it as mode of relaxation. The truth is that entertainment has the capacity to “ruin” society. The concept of entertainment in society has been growing and has the capacity to ruin the state of society while negatively influencing individuals.
In The Essay “The News” Neil Postman demonstrates the problems with News on TV and the Psychology behind it of why our society continues to watch. Postman displayed many points that becuase television news is must appeal to everyone in a short amount of time; the coverage is often shallow and gives a false impression of the world. Neil Postman describes the time restrictions of (22 mins) because of commercials overtaking the news. This reflects “The News” as we know it to become a big piece of entertainment that has nothing to do with the intellectual information that affects our lives. The lack of in-depth look on News nowadays draws an Appearance vs. Reality that the News isn’t what It should be.

According to Anna McHugh, schools of the future exploit the television’s effect of “quick and wide spreading” of current and often emotionally charged information which is designed and destined to be forgotten at the instant of its reception. Communication between people is the ideal way to commence this process, but in TV class, the communication is monodirectional, and the resulting material transmitted to the student remains data rather than knowledge. “Thinking of technology broadly constructed as a man made tool or object - they “do not know” but they can teach us humanism.”
The main media’s used are social media and television which are the main focus of chapter 9. Shirky’s article “Why I Just Asked My Students To Put Their Laptops Away” begins to talk about a way that people investigate and draw conclusions about the intersection of technology and everyday life. While Elavia writes about how reality shows are viewer driven rather producer or network driven. One thing social media and television have in common is how much of an impact they have on today. Everywhere you look there are ‘perfect’ images being displayed representing unrealistic goals.
A life without stories would be like a basketball game without nets. A Matter Of Balance is about a young boy named Harold that was in the National Park mining for gold. While he was walking through the forest Harold had noticed two bikers that had started to follow him. He ended up getting into a tight situation where he was at a dead end and had to scale down a cliff to lose the pursuers. Stories are a great thing to have in life because, they show the consequences of our actions, they help us see through the eyes of others, and they show us how to be human.
