What is the problem of a church that does not reach its community or has become invisible to the community? The writer believes the problem is the church has become so inwardly focused it has forgotten about winning souls to Christ. The writer faced this problem when the writer took over as lead pastor of Mebane Wesleyan Church. The church had become so inwardly focused that it was dying. Church attendance had gone down to 10 people including the pastor and his wife. There was no outreach to the community and it seemed as though the people were happy with what they had. When the former pastor took over it had dwindled down to 55 people. Over the last eight years, the church had declined to 8 people because of his work schedule and divisions among family members. As the years went by, the church just began to have a survival mentality and began to focus on each other. They forgot about the community. The writer admits for this project paper that with the 10-remaining people it was going to be a real task to get them to see why it was important to reach out to the community. It is unfortunate, but the pastor did not push the people to reach out, so it became more of a social club than a church. The writer did not hear anything from anyone that the church needed to reach out to our community because it was dying. It was evident the church was dying because they could not remember the last time someone was saved or baptized. One problem with being inwardly focused is 95 percent of time, money, and effort will just concentrate on the needs of one another. We do not have a right to expect Christ to be in our churches if we are not making disciples. The church has been given the commission to make disciples and if when the church ceases to do so it starts its descent towards dying. When the church begins to die and there is no response from the congregation it is easier to start a new church plant instead of trying to resurrect the present
