1.Before reading this speech, I never thought of the fact that blacks felt like “outcasts” during the 4th of July.

2.Douglass really made it a point that “the fourth of July is yours, not mine” (1). He is speaking about only whites celebrated Independence while blacks still do not have independence.

3.In this speech, Douglass mocked the United States for being a “hypocrite” when it came to independence in terms of America’s religious beliefs at the time.

4.The speech gives off a sense of frustration when it is stated that only the harshest words will be used in the topic of slavery and advocating black people’s independence.

7.I am surprised that because it is stated that it is illegal for anyone to teach a slave how to read and write, that Douglass can be such a capable reasoner as he created a speech filled with reasons of why slaves should not be treated the way they were treated at the time. He concludes that God did not “invent” slavery and the the American people, specifically the slave owners, should be ashamed for celebrating Independence Day.

8.In the slave narrative, I felt very sad that slave owners thought they could do whatever they want in order to make themselves happy. I thought of this someone who is spoiled and selfish would do.

9.I could not believe that a real human being would actually “get rid” of a child in front of the mother with no sympathy whatsoever. I think that this person needs to be charged with a crime.

10.A slave owner would travel throughout a state in order to purchase more slaves. This shows to me the desperate measures that a slave owner would take if he needed more slaves to
