“Family are people that you can count on”. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Ponyboy is the youngest one in a gang called The Greasers. They live in east side of town but in the west is their enemy gang called Socs. Socs are a lot wealthier than the Greasers. The Greasers have each other so that is all they need. Throughout the story the theme is be with the ones you love because they wont be their all the time. In the beginning, Ponyboy is treated like a kid but he doesn't like to be treated like that. They take care of each other and help each other out. “Soda will come in and drag me out of bed and wrestle me down and tickle me”(68). Soda is helping Ponyboy get out of bed to start their day. They are in a church because Johnny killed Bob so they are hiding out. The theme is family keeps people happy. People wont be there all the time. The church that the Greasers were hiding out is burning but Johnny was trapped so he saved Ponyboy and collapsed on Johnny. They took Johnny to the hospital to save him but he isn't going to be alive for a while and the Greasers all know it. So the Greasers are saying goodbyes to him. “We won, Dally panted. We stomped them, chased them outa our territory. Johnny didn't even try to grim at him”(148). Johnny knows that he is going to die so he says his goodbyes to them too. Sacrificing for family is powerful. Darry is helping out his family because his parents died. Also how Johnny and everyone else is helping out too.
