According to the article The “Rise and demise of Scope magazine: A media-historical perspective” Scope Magazine became incredibly popular in the 1960’s”. Some popular authors that had a chance to become apart of this educational movement are the authors Montemarano from the story “Dear Future” and the author Smith from “Ovatniah”. The story “Dear Future” is about a boy named James who finds a journal and begins to not feel depressed anymore because he understands life better. The story “Ovatniah” is about a girl named Marie who is sent to live with her grandma in search of ivory. “Dear Future” and “Ovatniah” have some similarities and differences like character traits and setting. One major difference is James and Marie’s character traits in “Ovatniah” and “Dear Future”. James in the story “Dear Future” is content or satisfied. On page 30 James says,”Today started out awful. But it’s better now”(Montemarano). This shows James is content or satisfied because earlier in the book James was uncertain about the future and didn’t think it was “particularly bright”. As the story continues and he learns these lessons through A and the journal, he realized things get better. James is satisfied with the uncertainties the future holds because he knows it always get’s better. In contrast, Marie from the story “Ovatniah” is uninterested. On page 23 the author writes “She no longer cared about the boarding school in Seattle, or her friends back in Anchorage. She was thinking about talking her mother into letting her stay with Aanaq for awhile”(Smith). This confirms Marie is uninterested because she no longer cares about the life her mom planned out for her and wants to spend her time with her grandmother. Marie does not care about the life her mom wants her to have and grew to love Aanaq. In conclusion, “Ovatniah” and “Dear Future” have differences in character traits for Marie and
