Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt is a realistic fiction book in which the theme of overcoming adversity and family are shown. Homecoming takes place in rural Connecticut sometime in the late 1960's. When their mother abandons them the Tillerman children must find a new home. Homecoming tells their journey to Bridgeport Connecticut and what they find there.

Dicey, the main character, portrays many boy-like physical traits and displays the personality traits of perseverance, loyalty, and toughness. Dicey is a tall and strong girl with short dark hair. Due to the situation she was is placed in Dicey has to learn to persevere. For instance, after Dicey spends all of the Tillermans’ money on food and supplies, she perseveres and helped people carry their groceries in order to make money for later purchases. Another example of Dicey’s perseverance is shown when she along with everyone else kept walking in their attempt to make it to Bridgeport. Despite the fact that they had little to no money they still managed to walk all the way to New Haven. Along that journey the theme of family is also seen. It is seen when they are walking along Route 1 and Sammy does not want to walk. When Maybeth wouldn't let them leave Sammy which showed a great sense of family. Another illustration of overcoming adversity is when they think that their grandmother doesn't want them to stay,after their first night of being there, and they overcome that adversity by working hard and doing work in order for their grandmother to let them stay. The final showing of the theme of family in Homecoming is when their grandmother rips up the letter to Cousin Eunice and let them stay. This showed great family because even though they're grandmother couldn't afford them, she still let them
