Overcoming Adversity
Everyone faces adversity throughout their lives, but it is necessary to be able to overcome this adversity in order to be successful. Some people do not know how to deal with adversity when faced with it, which can sometimes be the downfall of that person, but people can use adversity and learn from it to become better person. The short story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty is from the perspective of a sniper who is watching on top of a roof in Dublin, where a civil war wages. The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is about a man named Rainsford, who finds himself stranded on a dangerous island with a murderous man that he has to overcome in order to escape. The sniper faces the adversities of war and has to be alert and any given moment because there is always a threat of death. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, the main character, Rainsford, is traveling on a ship when he unexpectedly falls overboard and has to swim to the nearest island, Ship-Trap Island, a dread place that is feared by many sailors. Rainsford encounters a man named Zaroff there, who he later discovers is a savage who murders humans as a game to challenge his hunting skills. Rainsford realizes that he must defeat him in order to escape. Rainsford faces adversity on Ship-Trap Island because he has to overcome Zaroff and his games. People deal with their adversity in many different ways; however, one recurring attribute that everyone who has overcome adversity has is common is determination.
