The life of Edgar Allan Poe worked as an inspiration for his works and literature. Many of Poe’s great writings featured realistic events from tragic parts of his life. Over his lifetime he has lost loved ones, overcame obstacles, and became a successful writer and artist. Because of all the barriers and obstacles he had to overcome, Edgar Allan Poe was able to grow to be such an inspirational and popular writer.
Starting off, Edgar Allan Poe’s earliest years of life required him to overcome some of the worst tragedies a child can face. Poe moved in with his aunt Maria Clemm and cousin Virginia. He was finally able to provide for his new family with his new job at Southern Literary Messenger, as a successful editor. He was referred to as the “Tomahawk man” for cutting everyone down. Poe also experienced another death, but with someone that meant less to him. John Allan was dying and threatened Poe by leaving him nothing. Allan died in 1834; therefore, leaving Poe nothing. The life of Edgar Allan Poe was starting to experience positive outcomes. Furthermore, Getting into Poe’s early adult years he crosses paths with more hurdles he needs to overcome in his personal life. He needed to prove himself to his deceased foster father, John Allan. Furthermore, Poe’s aunt also attempted to send his cousin, Virginia, away to live with other family members, thus tearing Poe apart. In 1842, doctors found that Poe’s wife, Virgina, had caught tuberculosis. This greatly affected Poe because it reminded him of all the other important people he had lost to this illness. Poe wrote his poem “The Raven '' to illustrate how his love will pass away and he will never be able to forget about her, no matter how hard he tries. Poe started to drink because he knew there would be nothing he could do for his wife, because of the low income he made. After she passed, Poe wrote the poem “Annabell Lee” as a memorial for his lost love. The sad reality of Poe’s life helped him write several popular literary works.
Finally, the last years of Edgar Allan Poe’s life were not positive ones, as he faced many issues due to his sadness and sorrow. Poe searched for another woman to replace his wife so that he did not have to die alone. He eventually proposed to Helan Witman, but broke it off because her mother wished for him to sign a contract. He also would continue to write to Anne throughout his last years. Poe would end up engaged to elmira Shelton who he had met before, but Poe ends up dead after being found in bad conditions.
