Nevertheless, historically it was solely dominated by white swimmers while black athletes faced immense obstacles in accessing the required resources and opportunities. The movie's characters confront a variety of obstacles, including bias, insufficient access to resources, and personal demons. Pride is confidence in oneself, determination is the driving force to get toward our goals, and resilience is our ability to get through everything in between. These three aspects of humanity make up the indomitable human spirit, something all of us have that gives us an identity and self-awareness. This is expertly shown throughout the film through situations like Hakim blowing off school and his education due to his circumstances and pressure from a local drug dealer who effectively owns the town, who threatens the young swimmers and tries to take them away near the end of the film.
