Throughout this year I have had the opportunity to read numerous texts all relating to different issues, but one common thread between many of them is the presence of perseverance. In particular the book Romeo and Juliet shows just how powerful a person will can be, driving people to the extreme in order to obtain what they desire most. Romeo and Juliet is a play where both characters are constantly tested and forced to persevere in order to have what they want most, each other. However, as 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 tells us, true love requires perseverance in adversity. While Romeo may possess a genuine passion for Juliet, he sometimes struggles to embody this essential trait. He shows his failure of perseverance when he gives up on his pursuit of Rosaline and ultimately chooses to end his own life rather than face the loss of Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in which many characters are faced with tragedy. Shakespeare presents Juliet as the character who suffers the most, arguably making readers sympathise with her more. Shakespeare does this by his showing how the situation affects Juliet the most and how other characters affect Juliet’s struggle. Shakespeare also invokes our solicitude by depicting the scale of her hardship through the impact it has on her own personality and actions. Throughout Romeo and Juliet the theme of conflict is imparted in many forms, mostly through physical violence; a reflection of the Renaissance era in which there was political turmoil and a copious amount of European nations were at war. Shakespeare chose to dramatise the theme of conflict to showcase the ideology that conflict is inevitable and represent how “there can never be the good without the bad” (Hipponensi).Shakespeare successfully does so by exploring the theme of conflict in different forms; violence versus peace, parent versus child, sacred versus profane and inner conflict.
