Odysseus, the main character, left his homeland to go to battle in the Trojan War. After the war ended, he managed to travel home after a decade of being blown off course. When he arrived back, he was able to piece together who had remained loyal to him and who had not.
Once again, the stories of Jane and Odysseus share this stage, although Jane’s adventures are much less spectacular than Odysseus’s. The hero of The Odyssey has to defeat the cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and other powerful enemies. The hero does it by relying on his cunning, resourcefulness, and bravery. Although Jane does not have to defeat monsters, her test also requires boldness. She hides her fascination with the wallpaper because she knows John would disapprove it.
The Heroes Journey, identified by American scholar Joseph Campbell, is a pattern of narrative that describes the typical adventure of the main hero, whether that be a fiction or nonfiction hero. The first step is the call to adventure, where something shakes up the hero’s current situation and the hero starts experiencing change. Consequently, this theory is also applied to the fictional hero Odysseus in The Odyssey and the real-life hero Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist. In The Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on a 10-year voyage from Troy to Ithaca and encounters many monsters along the way including a gigantic Cyclops described as “…a brute so huge, he seemed no man at all…” (9 89-90).

Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.

Odysseus is cruel and quick to anger, arrogant, and does not truly win in the end. Along with the Hero’s journey, there is another journey that is not talked about. The villain’s journey is a parallel to the hero’s journey but usually ends the inverse of the Hero’s journey. Both hero and villain experience a call to adventure with guidance along the way.
The novel tells of Odysseus, who left his home, wife, and son to fight in the Trojan War. He has then been on a mission, to return home to Ithaca. Odysseus shows why he is an epic hero through his courage and wisdom during his redemptive journey back to Ithaca in books: 9,10, and 12. The courage and wisdom of Odysseus help him to prolong his life and survive throughout his whole journey back to his homelands.
Eventually, the men escaped the cave by tying themselves to the underside of the Cyclops's sheep. Despite his immense intellect, Ulysses falls short on occasion. After escaping the cave, the men made their way back to the ship. Feeling emboldened by his wonderful scheme, Ulysses began to taunt the giant. Despite his men’s pleas, Ulysses would not yield.
The odyssey, an epic told by Homer in ancient greece, has many major themes following odysseus’s adventures. While Odysseus is sentenced to never return home after the Trojan War. He is overcoming challenges to return home to his wife penelope and his son Telemachus. Throughout the story major themes of loyalty, hospitality and vengeance are hidden within the plot. The story continues to show his heroic side with three major traits.

The Odyssey and Ulysses were meant to be the same character written by two different individuals. Both individuals encountered obstacles at some point in their lives. Odysseus and Ulysses were both considered a hero in today’s society along with their similar characteristics. The heroic qualities and themes presented in both pieces of the literature work emphasized the similarity between the two characters along with their differences.
