The objective of the networking assignment part two is to inquire about what a day in the life of a profession is like, including the types of communications in which the interviewee engages in. After diligently calling my list of acquaintances for a referral to a professional in the financial discourse community, I received an offer from Pedro Febres, an insurance agent who happens to be an independent contractor representing State Farm insurance company.

To establish a career as an independent contractor representing an insurance company like State Farm, Febres suggests the following: a person would roughly need $30,000 to cover for expenses incurred at the inception of their business. His areas of specialization include: Auto, fire, life and disability Insurance. Due to regulations enacted in the prior years, Independent contractors like Febres can no longer assist clients with investing in the financial markets.
Listening, verbal communication, interpersonal communication, and written communication are the types of communication genres that Febres encounters daily in his profession. Febres must listen to clients to address their concerns irrespective of the clients’ mood and must communicate verbally, this ranges from answering phone calls from existing clients to conducting a meeting biweekly to review and set new objectives.
Majority of Febres’s clients are senior citizens who are technologically inept, verbal communication is a key aspect of Febres’s business, as he must be well spoken to develop trust and maintain this group of clients. In Febres’s own words, clients discriminate agents based on their ability to communicate effectively. Collaboratively, Written communication is increasingly becoming a prevalent aspect of his career as result of technological advances.
