Bibles for the Blind and Visually Handicapped International (BFB) is a non-profit organization located in Terre Haute, Indiana. They have operated since 1983 to provide braille Bibles and other reading materials to the blind and visually handicapped around the world for free. In order to gain a better understanding of this organization we will review three things, their organizational structure, mission statement and their vision statement. Knowing and understanding these three areas of an organization should tell us how they work, what they do, and where they are going in the future; let’s see how successful BFB is at conveying this information. These donations come from a variety of places, for instance, churches, religious groups and individual donors. When the organization was first developed in the early 80s they saw the need to make sure there was constant accountability for where these funds were going, so they developed a board of directors to oversee their operations. This board of directors sits at the top tier of their organizational structure and is comprised of normally four to five members, see figure #1. Under the board of directors their management hierarchy break into two different categories, Operations and Administration. In all reality we are talking about a maximum of 5 paid employees, so this structure works for this organization. All administrative, clerical, accounting and HR responsibilities (except training) are taken care of by one top manager while all manufacturing, warehouse, shipping and receiving, IT and training are taken care of the other. Under the top manager positions there are several others in charge for instance they have a binding shop foreman that also handles all training for the organization.
