William Dusinberre’s book Them Dark Days concentrates on the Gowrie plantation, the Butler Island plantation and, the Chicora Wood plantation as examples of the dark reality slavery had in the U.S. South. All three of these plantations are described by Dusinberre as “rice kingdoms”. He theorized that in the U.S. South these types of plantations were the most lucrative for planters and the most cruelly demanding to slaves. First and foremost in Dusinberre’s mind, gentleman planters such as Charles Manigualt, Pierce Butler and Robert Allston were capitalists driven to make profits not benevolent Southern patriarchs. This is because of your status as a well-to-do-planter and taking away the South’s resources will help the Union in winning the war. Futhermore, he indicated that if someone happenened to set fire to the bridge it will help the South in the war and that this task is easily accomplished because there is only one soldier guarding the bridge.
In this chapter of the Founding Brothers, Ellis centers the idea of Slavery. He employs the idea of both hindsight and foresight to explore the collapse of the Congress. He displays the Congress to not stand up to its expectations at both private and public means. Confidential affiliations were tested as the North and South commissioners opened and unraveled their hardships and resentment.
Before the Civil War, slavery was a very popular practice in the southern United States. Though not many people actually had slaves, most southerners defended it because one day owning a slave was the “American Dream.” In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses satire to reveal the greed, religious hypocrisy, and gullibility among the pre-Civil War south. Twain uses satire to demonstrate how greed can leave a person with less than what they began with.

The story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce takes place in Alabama. Peyton Farquhar the protagonist of Beirce’s story is a man who is to be hanged and takes place on Owl Creek Bridge. Farquhar was told that anyone who tried interfering with the railroad construction that was happening on the bridge would be hanged.
With the emotional tone the speaker utilizes, he provides logical evidence such as the “immortal Washington” and “Jackson” (10-11). By providing such terms, it motivates African Americans to fight the war because it reveals their patriotism. The descriptions and emotions the speaker used towards the treatments of African Americans set an empathetic but also an angry tone that urges many to fight for the Union army to defeat the tyrant system. On March 4, 1858, Senator James Henry Hammond from South Carolina, delivered a compelling speech. He encompassed a variety of thoughts into his speech to reflect how slavery existed in the South which benefitted countries in Europe. As a matter of fact, he wanted to present the speech to the Senate to show how much work the slaves did to provide the world’s top leading crop, cotton. Senator Hammond explains how the land to grow cotton is enough and no one ought to raise a war about it. The rhetorical strategies he uses within his speech are personification, syntax, and diction to make his statement equitable.
White abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, in his speech spoken near the beginning of the civil war, expresses his appreciation towards Toussaint-Louverture, but also explains the importance of allowing African Americans to willingly join their army. Phillips’s purpose is to show that utilizing African Americans willingly, and not forcefully, would be useful. He expresses an appreciative tone because he know other countries and states are listening, so he wants to be respectful yet grateful for his opportunity to be heard. Phillips begins his speech with historical comparisons.

Although a century apart, Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and Frederick Douglass’s What to a Slave is the fourth of July are kindred spirits. Notwithstanding the many differences in their respective writing styles, deep down the essence of the message conveyed is still very much the same. Both Martin Luther King Junior and Frederick Douglas had similar beliefs and concepts related to the treatment of the African American community. They both describe a tough yet heart breaking situation that makes them question their moral values and doubt the system and its ability to change for better.
“Letter to My Master, Thomas Auld” explores Frederick Douglass’ view of slavery and Thomas Auld, his former slave master, in a smart and emotionally charged letter originally written in 1848 and published in the abolitionist newspaper North Star. Throughout the letter, Douglass uses his own experience as a slave to drive his views, often using sarcasm and a dark recognition of his trials to drive his own view of slavery; that slavery should be abolished and that it is inhumane and cruel. Douglass’ decision to publish this paper in the North Star allowed him to bring to light his experiences to push other readers of the newspaper towards an abolitionist stand point by bringing his first-hand accounts of slavery forward and explaining, at times

The letter shows the loyalty that African Americans gave to their owners, despite all of the suffering they put them through. The letter showed that Anderson was intelligent and that he was no longer property of Colonial Anderson, but a man replying to another man. Never before could a slave write to their owner in such a way. Mr. Anderson states that “surely there will be a day of reckoning” for what he experienced in slavery. Anderson expresses that he, like the rest of the freed American slaves, would never turn back and never give up their freedom.
When someone receives money for the first time, one of the first things that may come to mind is, “How do I make more?” Whether it be out of greed or in pursuit of prosperity, planning ensues. Hard work is an option, but that takes a lifetime to reap. Perhaps one could win the lottery, or receive inheritance from a distant, elderly family member, but how practical is it to plan for that? Given that either choice has pros and cons, a decision, for some, would be hard to make.
