Pilcher ties connections between the history of food and Mexico’s developing national identity. The book never really has a central thesis.
Serpico, the New York City cop who couldn’t be bought by nobody. Serpico is a book that tells a story about a cop that works in New York, that wouldn’t take any brides from anybody and who had to deal with a very corrupt police department. There was a big gambling problem going on in New York and there was nothing being done about it so Serpico being such an honest cop decided he would try to get rid of the problem. In the following book report over Serpico, by Peter Maas, I will summarize the book’s contents and give my thoughts over the book.

In the book, National Colors: Racial Classification and the State in Latin America, author Mara Loveman examines the history of racial classification in Latin American nations, through the use of census records. There are three main questions that the author works to answer throughout the book. The first, is why did these nations historically classify populations by their race? Why did they eventually decide to stop using this method for some time and why was it brought back? The author also looks at the different ways these nations are influenced by other nations, and how this affects the recording of these populations over time.

With Ruiz, the melting pot did not welcome him for his outer appearance comparing to his friend Valdes. Their “friendship was cemented through school and sport. Growing up, I never believed I had an identity. When I delve back to my earliest of memories, both English and Spanish made an appearance in my dialogue. Because my life had always remained constrained in a blend of American and Mexican culture, it was difficult to distinguish exactly which group I resonated most with. Here in the Rio Grande Valley, it is an internal war that is fought constantly. Whoever could predominantly show their Mexican heritage would be held at a great regard for not neglecting their roots.
Identity Crisis In “Se Habla Espanol” by Tanya Maria Barrientos, speaking multiple languages at the time of Barrientos being a child, was not perceived as a bonus on your job application. When she was just three years old she was moved to the states and her parents completely stopped using Spanish and taught their children English. They did this in order to provide a better education for their children in America. They knew that if they spoke Spanish, they would be perceived as poor individuals.
Costa Rica is such a diverse country. With an array of different ecosystems and a mixture of people with roots from all over, it is no surprise that the music has just as much diversity. Costa Rica has plenty of influences on their music: Indigenous, European, African, Western, and other Latin American countries. Therefore, music in Costa Rica stems from various genres because of the many influences from other cultures. Traditional Costa Rican music relies heavily on the indigenous, European, and African influences that are shown within Costa Rica’s own demographics.
Oye Como Va is a version of Santana's version of the famous song by musician Tito Puente (1923-2000), in the album Abraxas. Oye Como Va is composed by his father, inspired by the song of Chanchullo (1937) by Israeli musician Cachao Lopez. Tito Puente recorded the song for the first time in 1963, just half a century ago. When recording the song Oye Como Va in 1970, musician Carlos Santana used the keyboard instead of the brass band, and especially the electric guitar variations to highlight the nuance of rock music. on the Latin rhythm.

In, Se Habla Espanol, Tanya Barrientos writes about how when she was younger she took pride in not knowing Spanish, but later wishes she knew the language. Myriam Marquez discusses in, Why and When We Speak Spanish in Public, that she takes pride in speaking Spanish because it is respectful to her culture. In this essay we will look into the ways in which Barrientos and Marquez differ in the ways they have been raised to view their culture.

The Cosmic Race, by José Vasconcelos, is about the new race that will arise in Latin America from the mixing of all races and the society they’ll create. It is an extremely influential essay in Mexico and still widely regarded today. In the The Cosmic Race it is said that America is the ancient home of the now lost Atlantean civilization (Vasconcelos 7). The downfall of the Atlanteans spawned four races: the Indian, the Black, the Mongol, and the White (Vasconcelos 9). Latin America, the essay argues, will be the homeland of the new Neo-Atlantean race as it already the racial melting pot of so many races (Vasconcelos 17-18).
