P.T. Barnum vs. The Greatest Showman By: Ariana Pacifico In December 2017, the movie The Greatest Showman was released. The movie was about P. T. Barnum who had eleven other brother and sisters. He grew up and had a poor childhood but later found fame and fortune when he started the Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. In the movie he was poor and his parents died when he was young. He had a big imagination and wanted to start a circus which he was very successful at. All his childhood he was mistreated and he wanted people to accept him. The extraordinary, P.T. Barnum was how the character , Jenny Lind was portrayed. In the movie and in real life, Jenny Lind was a beautiful opera singer who P.T. Barnum arranged for her to sing in a large theater. He later arranged for her to go on tour and he went with her. In the middle of the tour, she kissed him and he went back home. When he arrived, his wife Charity and his daughters were leaving because he had lost the house. In real life , Jenny Lind still did the American tour and got $21 million over a ninth-month engagement for all things Lind had including concert tickets, women’s hats, paper dolls and sheet music, also chewing tobacco. Many Americans would donate millions of dollars to her because of her angelic voice. The attraction between P.T and Jenny was never real. They were just business partners. She got tired of being on the tour with P.T. and traveling for nine months so they decided to end the tour. He gave 93 records in America which she earned $350,000. She ended up marrying a man named Otto Goldschmidt 1852. She was much dedicated to charity, which she wanted to open up a girl’s school in Stockholm. In the movie though, P.T. Barnum was infatuated by Jenny and did not know she could sing but when she did, he was amazed. Jenny Lind started singing at the age of 9 and went further with her career.
