Introduction
Peer Advocates for Wellness is an opportunity for California State University students to get involved with the wellness side of the Student Health and Counseling Services and the Recreation and Wellness Services. PAW interns work under the supervision of health educators and give information about the resources available at CSUEB. PAW interns perform this by hosting events, outreaches and presentations. As a result of my internship in PAW, my interest in Public Health has remained the same. Pursuing a career in Public Health is still undecided.
PAW does a really good job with promoting different information of topics such as Sexual Health, Drugs and Alcohol, Nutrition and Fitness, and Self-care. As PAW interns, we try to come …show more content…

As mentioned before, I learned and gain communication skills. I also learned different ways in which we can promote different resources to student. We can do this by tabling at different events or by taking part on campus events. I have also learned how to effectively speak to others about different topics. This is crucial because each topic can be hard to talk about for some individuals. Some individuals do not feel comfortable talking about certain topics. This is why the next thing I learned as a PAW intern is respecting other people’s opinions and beliefs. What also helped me with was taking the Health Science 3800 class, which is Multicultural Health. This class gave me the information needed in order to respect others opinions and beliefs when it comes to health. It also gave me the information needed to treat others with different ethnicities equally and with respect. This internship has taught me the importance of health education. Even as college students, it is important to know different health topics and how to take care of ourselves. It is also important to know what is available on your campus that can benefit you and help you live a healthy …show more content…

By taking some of my health science classes, I was able to know how treat students that come from different backgrounds. I was aware that some health topics are hard to discuss with some individuals. All the classes that I took as Health Science students will help me with any health care career I decide to pursue. I enjoyed the lower division Health Science classes because they informed me of the different health care careers. The research class taught me how to write a research paper and how to correctly use APA format. I personally enjoyed the upper division the most because it I learned so much valuable information. I learned about the laws and regulations when it comes to patient care. I am aware of the laws that protect patients and their medical records. One class that I personally enjoyed was Health Science 3550. This class taught about ethics and what is the right thing to do when it comes to patient care. I wrote a research paper in which I had to decide if an alcoholic patient should get a liver or not. I had mixed views about this topic. Doing my research I notice that this is a controversial topic. Why should a person that made themselves sick get any priority. According to Sharkey and Gillam (2010), patients with self-inflicted diseases should receive lower priority for medical . Health Science 3350 gave
