Burning Nation In the second book of the Divided We Fall trilogy, PFC Daniel Wright continues fighting for the Republic of Idaho against the federal government in what is becoming a second civil war and one of the oddest fought wars. As we see in the first book Danny Wright blames himself for letting a shot go and letting that shot be the leader to this war, a shot at a protest in Boise that caused fellow National Guardsmen to open fire, killing several protestors which were the cause to the accidental gun shot. A standoff with the Feds eventually took place after the major conflict. With the Idaho governor’s refusal to enforce federal laws, federal forces have invaded Idaho. Innocent people are killed, prisoners are tortured, the death toll mounts, and soon it is difficult to say what has been won, though it is easy to see what has been lost. Along with all the other issues with the feds coming in, they have no electricity, no gas; they do not have anything but hiding places and fear. The fear is what keeps most doing good but for others like PFC Daniel Wright that is what keeps the fight going. The media does not inform they only obfuscate. Long, italicized excerpts from various news sources inserted between chapters effectively demonstrate how the media can muddle and provoke rather than offer necessary, thoughtful analysis. There is lots of death, drama, and romance. All of which takes place in Freedom Lake, which is very ironic to what is taking place because it is there where they fight for freedom. The imagery and descriptive and figurative language makes me perpetually on the edge of my seat there is always something more to wait for and there is an enormous amount of rising action. This book is very good at describing death, sadness, and despair because there is a great deal of it in this book. The main characters are Danny, Becca, JoBell, Sweeney, and Cal. There are just normal high schoolers, which are found in the middle of a raging war. All are exposed to real friendship in the hardships of life and love. They all stick together and fight through it all even though Danny does not want his friends to help. I really liked how the author or Trent Reedy lets the reader feel like the world around you is falling apart. Like on page 264 when Danny says “According to Crow, Texas and Oklahoma have joined in against the Fed. All hell is about to break loose.” This gave me the feeling that I was in the action and this was going to happen as he wrote it so good and gave me a feel of being in the
