Founded in 1967, United Way of Regina is dedicated to improving lives and building its community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action. The organization funds services and programs dealing with issues related to children, poverty and health in Regina. Its current focus is the promotion of learning and development opportunities for children. United Way of Regina raises funds primarily through the annual Community Campaign, which includes donations from company payrolls, corporations and individuals. It has a call line called 211-Saskatchewan in collaboration with the United Way of Saskatoon and Area to provide information on over 5,000 community, health, and government services in the area.

I modified the grant as a result of search because this foundation provides money for seniors and veterans. This grant proposal will be written to support two identified vulnerable populations the Foundation has determined as underserved. This will make this grant stand out to the funders and evidence its uniqueness by demonstrating the goals and objectives outlined by the Foundation, inclusive of two underserved populations.
In “Its Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” by Brownlee, she claims that fast food companies and the portions they provide are the real reason that America has seen such a big increase in obesity. I agree that fast food companies are to blame for the rise in obesity and they should begin to take more responsibility for the affect they have had on America. In the not too distant past, fast food portions were smaller and could actually be seen as a suitable meal as they provided enough calories for one person. The Terry Fox Foundation (TFF) is an organization founded in 1980 after Terry Fox, a 20-year old patient with bone cancer, ran his Marathon of Hope 5300 km across Canada to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Terry ran “simply to remind Canadians of the importance of finding a cure” (The Terry Fox Foundation ) The TFF holds an annual run in Terry’s name to fundraise for cancer research and bring the visions/values of their organization to life. The TFF believes it is important to tell Terry’s story, and show how one hard working Canadian can make a difference by standing up and doing what they believe in. Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.
Whatever the perspective, teachers can embrace different cultures in which children bring to the classroom their languages. Emmitt and colleagues articulate that children’s first language has differences in cultural context that can make meaning and reality.
