Those experiencing a substandard way of living may not be able to obtain quality education which can cause a lack of sufficient employment. Mexican-American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) is known as an American farm worker, a prominent union leader, labor organizer, and a civil rights activist. By having much experience since he was a migrant worker when he was very young, Chavez with another co-founder created The National Farm Workers Association in 1962 that later became United Farm Workers. As a union leader, his union and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee made their first strike against grape growers in California. I think that the family’s greatest struggles stemmed from the sudden lack of a steady flow of income, and the consequences that followed. The first struggles that we saw were Mariana being unable to do things for or with her children, being forced to make the same, most likely cheap, meals every day, and having to leave the children alone in the apartment while she was trying to find work or sell empanadas. The greatest difficulty the family ran into was losing their apartment and becoming homeless. Mariana had to keep the kids with her at almost all times, and they were forced to live on the streets while they tried to collect cans and find some way to make a living. Gabi had to drop out of school to try and help support his family as well.
Although it is not stated clearly, the texts have many evidences that point towards their fate. Moreover, with the change from a third-person narration to a bystander-style narration, it further highlights the inescapability of their situation and hence, amplifies the tragedy and arouses the reader’s pity for the characters.
