Johann Pachelbel is a German Baroque composer, and is most well known for his score called Pachelbel’s canon. Most of his work was forgotten for centuries and once it was rediscovered it became one of most famous pieces of classical music. It is not only frequently played at weddings but also was in many commercials and films in the 1990’s because of its ionic melody. In his lifetime Johann Pachelbel was known mainly for his organ and other keyboard music where as today he is mainly known as an important composer of church and chamber music. He composed a large majority of sacred and secular music, and his contributions have earned him a place as one of the most important composers of the Baroque era. Pachelbel’s Canon is mainly polyphonic texture, but in the beginning of the song it is homophonic. After the double bass starts playing in the first two bars of the of the song, then the violin enters. Four bars into the music the second violin imitates the same melody and that is what creates the polyphonic texture. The violins imitate the melody through out the piece. The cord progression repeats throughout, and the bass line also repeats, this makes it a “ground bass,” a ground bass is a musical form in which the bass line repeats continuously while the upper parts change. The tempo for this piece of music is usually around 60 beats per minute, but there are slower, and faster versions of the song. The tempo is usually slower in the beginning of the song and progressively gets faster throughout the piece; Pachelbel uses a simple 4/4-meter in this song.
