Pair bonding is an attachment bond that is a natural part of human development. This bond is like no other, containing sexual and intimate drives. Individual’s pair bond with others in order to feel a calmness and ease in life. Once pair boding occurs, individuals will feel everything will be okay in the world around them. Humans will pair bond in order to feel safe, secure, and attached to significant others. If pair bonding does not occur, individuals can become depressed, anxious, and emotionally disrupted. Human’s pair bond is motivated to avoid negative feelings and consume love and attachment. Individuals reward system influences one’s desire to pair bond. From personal experience, relationships will continuously have it’s up’s and downs; however it is rewarding to be in a committed long-term relationships. One benefit for maintaining long-term relationships is the building of memories that will be held for a lifetime, for example, traveling, marriage, and childbirth (Acevedo & Aron, 2014). Another benefit to having long-term relationships is the possibility of marriage. Studies show individuals who are married are happier and suffer less mental illness. Married couples report having higher sexual and emotional satisfaction (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).
The benefits to long-term relationships can be great, however every relationship will face challenges that either strengthen or weaken the relationship. A challenge that occurs in adulthood relationships is the change in personality characteristics. Individuals are still developing into who they are becoming, which can take a toll on relationships. Another challenge in adulthood relationships is the commitment to the future.
