The Republic of Panama is a government with three branches and a strong Constitution. The Panama government includes a Democracy and many political parties. When understanding the government of Panama, it is important to understand which type of government is represented and why, how the head of state or head of government is chosen, and what role the military plays within the government. The type of government that best represents Panama would be a Democracy, meaning that the officials are chosen through fair elections. Leaders in the executive branch, which is the president and vice presidents, must be thirty-five years old or older and must be born as Panamanians. Once selected, the president serves a five-year term (“The Governmental System”). The president chooses the ministers, and the ministers, vice presidents, and president are the members of the Cabinet Council. The Legislature of Panama is unicameral and has sixty-seven members who run for office at the same time as the executive leaders. The judicial branch’s judges are nominated by cabinet members and approved by the legislature (“The Governmental System”). Some of the political parties or leaders which may have an impact on who the president is include the Democratic Change, the Democratic Revolutionary Party, the Nationalist Republican Party, the Panamenista Party, and the Popular Party (“Central Intelligence Agency”).
