Panem the Terrible “Panem et circenses,” is the saying that defines the country of Panem as being a country of hungry fools. “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins is a futuristic dystopian novel with roots in Ancient Rome, it centers around a teen girl fighting to survive, day by day. The usage of the Latin word Panem in the novel signifies how the political powers see the country, sheds light on the gruesome gladiatorial games of Ancient Rome, and plays into the phrase “Panem et circenses.” The Capitol sees the districts as communities of fools who hunger, while the powers that be are corrupted by power and status. Whenever Katniss spoke about the Capitol, she often notes that the Capitol (and richer districts) never go hungry, while the (poorer) districts starve.
These twelve districts, including the Capital, make up what is known as Panem. Each year, they host the “Hunger Games,” which is a fight to the death which keep the districts from rebelling against the Capital. In the book, Katniss and Peeta anger the Capital when they played them so the two could both win the Hunger Games and go home safely. Although they are safe now, doesn’t mean they will be later because their stunt angered the Capital and they want revenge. Eventually, Katniss and her supporters fight against the Capital hoping to eradicate, Snow, the
Pan was the god of the wild, hunting and lover of the nymphs and sexuality not fertility. He was seen as a half man and horns like a goat. Pan does not have a temple where he was worshipped but people used caves and such to worship him. When Pan was first worshipped it was in Arcadia because in the Greek time it was thought to be a scared place ”before the Moon”. Nymphs would turn him down because they thought he was ugly.
In Hunger Games what creates the rebellion is inequality and extreme differences between poor and rich people. Country called Panem is divided in Capitol and districts from 1 to 12. The wealthiest is the Capitol and from District 1 to District 12, the level of poverty and hunger increases. Withal, Hunger Games are mortal games which are designed to
Taken place in the fictional place of Panem, located in what was North America, is the dystopian, post-apocalyptic book called “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. Released in September of 2008, the series has become very popular. The first book in the trilogy starts off with the main character, Katniss Everdeen, with her sister and mother in District 12. Her sister, Primrose, is nervous because it’s the annual reaping where they pick one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 -18 to fight in The Hunger Games, which is televised for all of Panem to see. Personally, I find this book very intriguing.
In the Hunger Games series, a dystopian future is set up. The government of Panem, The Capitol, holds the wealth of Panem giving it the power to control all districts. In order to enforce this theory, they created the Hunger Games. They suppressed the rights of the citizen’s of Panem and selected their children in order to fight each other do death for survival. These games were created to scare the people and show them who was in charge.
A German philosopher by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.”. Friedrich Nietzsche was also a cultural critic, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar, who wrote poems mainly about the non-existence of God. This quote from him explains how we suffer in life and when we survive we find the reason for us suffering and learn from it, or better ourselves during our suffering. In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, she illustrates through her symbolism and characterization that survival is the result of strength. Suzanne Collins uses characterization to present how survival is a result when someone or something has strength.
The twelve districts in theory should view the Hunger Games as the necessary tool that keeps Panem from uprising and self-destruction, however, the reception of the Games in the really poor districts clearly shows that the Capitol cannot reform them to think so. Statistically, the poor districts are always the most likely to lose one year’s competition because they lack resources to train tributes and their children are starving. Therefore, the response to the Hunger Games in the poor districts who are on the brink of starvation is the most dramatic. Citizens of districts such as 11 and 12 can only view the Games as injustice because once a child is chosen at the Reaping he or she is evidently doomed to die. There are rare exceptions as the
Panema is made up of thirteen colonies with the capitol sitting in the middle of Panem controlling, making the rules and in charge of hosting the yearly hunger games. One can see how this set up could closely symbolize to back in history during the colonial period when North America was also split into thirteen colonies. Symbols can also be seen as pictures or abstractions (285). In this novel Katniss Evergreen the
North America has been taken over, destroyed and is now split up into 12 districts stated by a brutal and demanding government located at the capitol. In the beginning of the story Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl from District 12 shouts out “I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute!” Katniss shouts this because her younger sister Primrose Everdeen (12 years old) had been selected in the lottery system. Katniss is 4 years old and has

In Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games, Collins has a variety of ways to describe each of the settings, by using colors and structures to define different class levels in Panem. Panem was once known as North America, but after years of destruction, it eventually became Panem. In Panem, there are 12 separate districts that people live within, as well as the Capitol, which is another section of the country that people live in. It is fairly easy to differentiate the districts from one another and very easy to differentiate the districts from the Capitol. Those who live in the districts, live in poverty.
The Hunger Games (2012), an action packed adventure movie directed by Gary Ross which is about a Utopia and Dystopia depending on which district you live in. Panem is the country that was known as North America now consist of 12 districts. These two must fight for their lives against each other and the 22 other ‘Tributes’.
Ironically, Panem shows the citizens as if all the districts feel the same as Effie. Depending on what the camera outlines the circumstances of the area, Capitol believes that the districts, too, enjoy engaging in the hunger game, where the districts feels complete opposite. Likewise, mass media of today’s society is depended on the TV as a mean of communication, but veracity of condition is, nevertheless, conceded out in the real world. Noticing the fact that the districts are under the “trap” of Capitol’s surveillance, the audience feels
On the other hand, there is Capitol who has political control in the nation of panem. The story starts when each district must offer a male and female between the ages of 12-18 at a public reaping as a penance for their uprising. The tributes which are male and female shall be delivered to the Capitol and then transferred to a public arena where they will fight with other district until a lone victor remains. This tradition called the hunger games. The story centers was coming from poor district 12 where Katniss and Peeta as their tributes.
