Between Remembering and Forgetting The book Strength In What Remains by Tracy Kidder, tells the journey of Deo, from his escape from Hutu-Tutsi genocide in the mid-1990s to the United States and back to Burundi. In his journey, Deo struggle’s against his memories of the genocide, he was faced with two different ways of dealing with his memories, to forget or to remember. In the first half of the book, Deo follows the Burundian concept of forgetting about the past, this is due too the unwillingness of victims to recall and, thereby, relive the violence and pain of their recent history. But as he went through his journey, he realizes that although he wants to forget his past tragedies, he was unable to do so.
The First Part Last is a novel about this teenager named Bobby and how teenage pregnancy affects his life. The story goes from then to now every chapter and, and at the end of the book, the then and now meets up. Bobby Impregnates a teenage girl named Nia (his girlfriend). The story talks about how they make it through this rough time. Near the end, Nia starts to get eclipse, which girls have a chance to get when they are pregnant.
North Dakota Road Trip The passage from The Horizontal World by Debra Marquart’s 2006 memoir is all about growing up in North Dakota and knowing the land around it. She is describing one of her memories when she was growing up in North Dakota. She relates to TV news anchors and really anyone who may know some of the geography of North Dakota such as the residents. Talks very highly of North Dakota’s geography and how great it is to live and grow up there, so she is trying to tell everyone why they should live there.
The Glass Castle In The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls, it presents welfare to utilize the idea of overcoming adversity and achieving success despite difficult circumstances. In the beginning of the book, Walls connects her personal experience as a kid to the symbol of welfare in order to emphasize how it was proclaimed through her childhood and adulthood. Take, for example, that In the passage, Jeanette explains, “But for the time being, things might get a little tight around the house.
Authors of picture books use various elements to appeal to the audience. Marisa Montes’ statement “The best picture books are warm, humorous, and can be read again and again. There must be something new to take away each time you read it. It has to hold up to multiple readings. There must be substance, depth and layering” is not true in every case because not every picture book will contain all of these elements.
How does one become a man? Have you ever wondered if you are truly a man? In the novel, “The First Part Last,” the main character, Bobby, wonders if he would ever become a man. Bobby is a sixteen year old teenager who was careless and impregnated another teen named Nia. Bobby decides to raise the baby himself after the mother goes into an irreversible vegetative coma.
In Anne Moody’s autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, she discusses the hardships that “negroes” faced during a time when segregation was prevalent. Anne Moody, or Essie Mae, as she was often referred to in the book, was a black rights activist. Certain events lead her to be such a strong advocate for African Americans. Her first memory of being separated from white people was at the movie theatre. Children were the last to see color, so they did not realize how sternly the segregation was enforced.

Coming of Age in the Civil Rights Movement Despite slavery coming to an end in the mid 1800’s, African Americans struggled to live a truly free life. Even in the 20th century, poverty proved to be an inescapable burden that kept them stuck on the lowest levels of society. Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody is an autobiography about the struggle of growing up on a plantation in rural Mississippi during the Civil Rights era. Sharecropping played an extensive role at keeping former slaves in poverty. Sharecropping dominated the South, but this type of job inequality was widespread throughout the entire country, making it near impossible to obtain a respectable job, even branding a college degree.
It is often that many celebrities have so-called Cinderella stories, coming from nothing and building themselves up to greatness. Some of the most iconic figures in the world came from poverty-ridden areas, but were gifted with other valuable attributes. Things such as intelligence, athleticism, character and more give those gifted with them an advantage over others, leading them to rise to the top. But sometimes, it’s not what one is born with, it is how they make use of their situation to strive for the best possible outcome. In The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls has a similar problem, growing up in mainly West Virginia, having only her siblings to try and get out.

Anne Moody wrote the autobiography Coming of Age in Mississippi where it begins in 1944 highlighting the struggles of her childhood as it progresses to her adult life in 1964. Moody sought a different path than the rest of her family which led her to be apart of the civil right movement that occurred. She discusses her childhood where her father left their family for another woman, and her mother struggles providing for her family. Essie Mae had a traumatic experience in her time on the plantation to where in her adult life she was “still haunted by dreams of the time we lived on Mr.Carter’s plantation.”

The first essay I will review is “Small Asian Woman” by Kelley Pheng. I found this paper to be very relatable to my own life because I also have parents much like her mother—a parent who constantly lectures and scolds seemingly for the sake of it. Although my parents and I seldom saw eye to eye on several issues, I learned from them to never take life for granted. Her essay is a powerful piece that sheds light onto the harsh life that her mother had lived. It depicts her mother as a warrior in her own right and encourages others—who were much like the younger Kelley—to acknowledge the hardships of their parents.
