Overall, there is no straight answer to whether or not Paradise Lost is a misogynistic or feminist work. The poem seems to fit into both categories at times, and lies somewhere in the middle. Viewing the poem in terms of today’s standards gives it a completely different look than the reception of the poem in the seventeenth century when Milton was writing it. His other writings such as the divorce tracts also give a glimpse as to what Milton was thinking when he wrote the poem, but it is not definite. Many critics are from writing from the 1970s new wave of gender criticism which effects how the poem is viewed. Eve is a very complex character with contrasting personality traits at times.
