In Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, young Macon Dead the 3rd, also known as Milkman, is continuously “flying” away from his problems. With his father, Macon Dead Jr., being a man of money and greed and his mother Ruth Foster Dead being a subdued and quiet woman of a higher class, Milkman has a clear advantage than most people of color. 1. Paradise Lost was written by John Milton and first published in 1667, and has influenced poetry and literature in many ways since then. In fact many of the authors and works that we have read in this class were influenced by Paradise Lost. I think the biggest influence that I have seen was the use of opposition. I’m sure that this was not something the Milton started but he was a master at using the imagery of light and dark to compare good and evil, God and Satan, as well as Heaven and Hell.
Whereas Moore introduced us to the gender in the line “I wonder what Adam and Eve think of it by this time”. “Adam” and “Eve” plays the role as a man and woman in the poem. In Gibran poem, the line “Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls” indicates that the communication between two souls are not bounded with anything and is free to know each other. Through the frequent use of repetition, Kay puts emphasis on how women are defined in relation to males. Additionally, she also uses connotation to remind women they are more than what they are perceived to be in relation to others and they have the power to define themselves. Therefore the main idea of the poem is to perhaps remind women of their worth and inspire them to define themselves on their own terms, and not through the eyes of men or in comparison/relation to their relationship with others.
