She Kills Monsters is an excellent play that explores relationships and grief perfectly. This play is about the story of Agnes Evans and her journey through processing the sudden and tragic death of her sister, Tilly. Agnes and Tilly are complete opposites, and because of that, Agnes never really took the time to get to know her sister until now. She Kills Monsters themes are explored in various ways. However, the three primary ones that stand out are parallelism within the character, battle repetition, and the symbolism of Tilly's entire Dungeon Dragon campaign. In Tilly's Dungeon Dragon, many characters within the game directly reflect people in her actual life. Because they mimic the struggles that they lose, these physical fights repeat constantly. Agnes faces battles at the beginning and middle of the show, where she frequently loses or takes a beating, but at the very end, she defeats a significant dragon on her own and frees Tilly. "AGNES tries to avoid the attack the best she can, but gets impaled by Bugbear's weapon" (Qiu Nguyen 30). Agnes's ongoing struggles symbolize her confusion, sadness, and loss. However, the ultimate battle shows that she has finally accepted what has happened and is eventually taking action to free herself of the unbearable misery. Although the Dungeon and Dragons Campaign portrays Tilly's soul as being very precise, it is clear that in Agnes's real life, Tilly's soul stands for accepting that loss. "The journey before us is too perilous and the prize too personal for me to expect. You to risk your lives. I'm just one warrior, and you all have so much ahead of you. Please, if you do not wish to continue, you have my blessing to stay here and be safe" (Qui Nguyen 34). With this quote, it is clear that the team is setting out on a quest to retrieve Tilly's soul. Despite Tilly's requests for them to stay, they refuse her and continue on the journey to find their friend and sister's soul. Agnes frees Tilly's soul in the game, but in reality, she discovers that Tilly's lost soul is merely a part of the game and that the only genuine way to offer herself and Tilly some relief is to let it go and move
