Part 6: Important laws for teachers
In the education setting a lot of things can happen that is beyond the control of an educator or administrator to stop. Due to the high levels of responsibility that is given to educators and the multiple black and white and gray areas that exist within any conflict or dispute that, it is important to have laws and regulations that protect and aid educators in these situations. These laws cover multiple subjects and one of these topics is bullying and how to handle bullying within the school. IDEA is a law that “determines how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education, and related services to children with disabilities form birth to age twenty-six”(Education). IDEA also guarantees Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that prepare them for further education employment, and independent living”. FAPE also allows students from the age of three to Twenty-one, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that will meet their needs and allow them to have access to the general curriculum mandated by the state. Underneath special education law there is also 504 Accommodations, which are for those who are not disabled to the extent necessary to qualify for protection under IDEA. The term 504 accommodations refer to simple changes a school must make to allow student with disabilities equal access to education. Examples of the changes include: “Allowing a wheelchair-bound student to leave class early to get to their next class, providing large-print books to visually impaired students, and providing students with low-distraction work areas”
