The Argument Behind the Book Although this book and its content is not necessarily for all ages, I argue that the book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie should n’t be banned for a specific age group due to the language and violence that reflects in the book. Some of the themes that we can see in this book are friendship, death, and poverty. During all this time parents, school, and even students think the book is inappropriate. Suggestions have been made that the book should be for a more mature audience. Though he tries to see himself in a positive light, he ultimately comes to the conclusion that he is just a “poor ass kid”. “It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor. You start believing that you’re poor because you’re stupid and ugly. And then you start believing that you’re stupid and ugly because you’re Indian and because you’re Indian you start believing you’re destined to be poor. It’s an ugly circle and there’s nothing you can do about it ”(p.13). The article discusses the importance of having that one friend who understands you more than any other, your best friend. Just like the bond that Arnold and Rowdy had before he moved to his new school they were inseparable, Rowdy defended Arnold from getting bullied they were like brothers. “But in all fairness, my best friend is the person who has dreams for me to be more than I can dream for myself, the one who pushes me to pass own expectations”(27).
