Participation Trophies In the debate between the authors Parker Abate and Betty Berden, the two speak about all kids getting participation trophies and how it affects each kid. Though they both make outstanding points, I am all on Betty Berden's side; no participation trophies. Participation trophies should strictly be given to the winners, not every kid who takes a step on the field. When playing sports, most kids are learning how to work with a team and how to communicate; simple life lessons.
Should Kids Get Participation Trophies???? Intro with hook: everyone loves being in the best shape of their lives and work hard but why work hard if you can win trophies without even trying??? Kids think that they could just win trophies by not trying. some people think that some people don't.
Many people contend that children should receive participation trophies in sports, however, why should they not get one? Kids who truly deserve to be awarded won't feel as special, seeing as you can get an award without putting in the effort. Although the participation award can make them feel involved, it shouldn't be granted to them as it can value less of an incentive and responsibility. Children in sports should not get a participation trophy for their attendance, and attitude toward the activity. Rosenwald both concept the sacrifices one has to take to be an “elite athlete”. I firmly believe that the sacrifices taken to become an “elite athlete” are not ultimately worth it in the long run because of the injuries and health management. To support this, the author from “The Secret Life of Tiger Woods” proclaimed “...he fell down in his backyard without a cellphone and had to just lie there until his daughter happened to find him.” This quote the type of pain Woods lived through because of all his intense golf training. The person to start the debate was James Harrison linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He thinks kids shouldn’t get participation trophies, and I agree. I think kids need to learn why getting a trophy for showing up isn’t good.
Whenever your child plays a sport, you would want them to get a trophy, but if they don't do anything and still receive a trophy, then they are being set up for failure. In the real world, you will not earn anything from doing nothing, but when your child receives a trophy for doing nothing, they are being taught that they don't need to do anything and they will still be rewarded. Firstly, participation trophies show kids that all they need to do the rest of their lives is just show up and they will do good. When kids play a sport, you want them to get a trophy for winning, not for just being there and participating.
“Participation trophies tell them that what matters is showing up for practice, learning the rules and rituals of the game and working hard” (Heffernan). While these are great points, some children don't always show up and other children don't always work hard, yet they still get the trophy. There are some children though who do follow the rules and do show up whenever they can. These children should be rewarded for their hard work and dedication to the team. "The idea of giving trophies only to the winners doesn't emphasize enough of the other values that are important.

In today’s society, more and more kids are getting participation trophies for doing nothing except showing up. Yes it is important to teach kids to do their best, but being awarded just for being as good as you already are doesn't give kids the motivation to make themselves even better. Why would they want to improve if they already have that shiny trophy? I do not believe that participation trophies should be handed out like they are.
