Pat Riley’s “The winner within” is a life plan for the professional basketball players he coached in the NBA, and the leadership skills he had to lead his team to victory. Every chapter in his book focuses on one subject, and every subject for each chapter gives different ways that a team can become successful on and off the court.
Riley’s coaching plan is not just for the court but it can be used in everyday life. Every strategy he gives us in each chapter becomes inspiring and motivation. Pat Riley mindset wasn’t all about him, he loved his team so much that he sacrificed every day for them. He gives encouraging words to his players about life problems and try to figure out new methods for helping them. Chapter four is when Pat Riley really get deep in the discussion about life problems and how to overcome them, he calls this chapter “Thunderbolts”. He States that “Thunderbolts are the problems that get in the way of a clear vision, but they are part of life. “Thunderbolts is a lesson to never give up on anything and come back much harder than before. The keys of overcoming the thunderbolts is all about your mental attitude, how easy is it for you to give up on things? Will you come back harder than before? These are the things that Pat Riley wants to see in his players. Mike Krzyzewski is arguable the greatest college basketball coach of all time and his style of coaching is very similar to Pat Riley’s, but coach K have to deal with teenagers and coach Riley is dealing with grown men so the leadership tactics has to be different in some way. Coach K has written five books on leadership and his first book “Leading with the heart” is similar to this book on Pat Riley.
