Introduction Pat Summitt is a staple for the Lady Vols Basketball Program. The thought that comes to mind when you think of the University of Tennessee athletic program, Pat Summitt will come to mind. Pat Summitt was not only paved the way for women within sport but she was also a loving mentor, mother, and daughter. Pat Summitt will forever have an impact on women’s basketball. Bio Patricia Sue Head (maiden name) born on June 14, 1952 in Clarksville, Tennessee to the proud parents of Richard and Hazel Head. Later known as Pat, was the middle child on four children. Summitt never had a losing season in all of the seasons that she was a coach for Tennessee. During her time with the Lady Vols she was named as the assistant coach for the women’s US Olympic basketball team for the Moscow Olympics but due to the boycott she did not coach. Then in the 1964 Olympics in Los Angeles, she was named the head coach of which she then won the gold medal. Pat Summit was inducted in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 in the first year that a class was inducted. A year later she was awarded with the Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Century title. In March 22, 2005 is became the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history, thus surpassing Dean Smith of North Carolina. In February of 2009, is the game that Summitt won her 1000 game. During her coaching career she won 8 National Titles and was 6 time SEC Coach of the Year while also earning 7 time NCAA Coach of the Year. She ended her coaching career with 1,098 wins. While under her the Lady Vols made it to the Sweet Sixteen every single time except for 2009 under Summitt’s regin. She announced that she had dementia in 2011, in an interview with Robin Roberts, Summitt explains why is she continuing to coach her response was, “it’s all about the players, I like to see young people succeed...I always say I have something to teach them” (ABC NEWS, 2011). This just shows the relationship that she had with each of the athletes that she recruiter to come play basketball. She want more for them than just being a basketball player, she wanted to equip
