At the age of four I was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disease called Mucopolysaccharidosis.. Being diagnosed meant my lifespan will be filled with many struggles including wheelchair boundness, mental handicaps and early death.. However, through my strength and my doctor’s achievements I strived to overcome my limitations and not let them define me. Due to my weekly infusions I have been given a second shot at life that has driven me to succeed in helping others. Given this second chance, my aspirations of working in healthcare were formed. Given the opportunity and responsibility of becoming a Pathmaker intern. I will be able to gain hands on experience that is critical in understanding how to provide quality patient care and support. So upon entering this program I have three goals that I hope to accomplish through this program. First is to be able to help patients and providers in the clinical setting, not just be an observer. I feel there is great responsibility in being a Pathmaker intern, that entails being actively engaged and eager to learn. In achieving this I plan to be attentive in each thing I experience hands on and observe, while always ready for the task at hand. Second, is to take my experiences I have as a patient and couple them with the internship to further develop my understanding of the various skills such as patience and communication that is necessary for providing care. Being that I have grown up within a hospital setting, I understand how good care and communication by clinicians is necessary for a patient to heal. In achieving this I will build upon my already caring nature, and interact with patients and providers regularly to better hone and understand the interpersonal skills that are vital for working in
